Wayne woke me up one morning to come and look out our back door.....the tree that was there was no longer a tree....it wasn't even a stump...it was a hole in the ground.  The hole just got progressively bigger and bigger.
They started adding steel plates for the diggers and trucks to come and go.
Pouring concrete when we got home from work...was late as we had ever see them working.  Usually they have finished by the time we come home...but not this night.
We can see that they have wrapped the banks up...not sure why.  The have created a place to wash all the trucks as they leave the building site....it is law...as not dirty truck is allowed on the road.
Laying the foundations for the trucks to move on and unwrapping the banks.  The buildings at the back right side are for the workers.
Out our front window are the trucks lining up, to take the dirt away to where we don't know.
And now they are slowly eroding the grass, taking the dirt away, diggers working furiously, trucks coming and going, men working and working.  All the above happened in the last month.  Makes you wonder what will happen in the next month.

MAE Dinner 2010

It was that time of the year again for our annual dinner, Anne and her team created a wonderful night.  It was at the Hotel Peninsula Excelsior.  It was a masked event and great fun.
The lady that pulled it all off.  There was also a photo booth which was a great hit with all.

Glen looking fabulous in her mask.

Our table trying to work out the eyes to win a prize...sadly we didn't win.

Game time....balloon between the legs relay....

and the winners!

Then it was an eating, drinking tying and blowing competition.
Two of the important men in my life in Singapore.  One needs no explaining - the other pays my salary!

Blind folded musical chairs...Wayne and Carol trying to find out which one was the human chair or contestant.

Dancing...no finding a chair1

And the victor....a nice red vase for a prize.
2010 has  been an interesting year and this was a nice way to almost end the year.  When its annual dinner time we know the year is nearly at an end.  There is only 6 weeks to go and so much to do before the end of the year.  It will get done!  Shopping for a dress to wear was made easy thanks to Brigid and Katie I was able to buy a dress for $40 marked down from $159...a good bargain.  Masks were another  thing....wearing glasses makes wearing masks a hard task.  As usual there were door prizes and this year they gave them out at the door...in the form of an envelope with the voucher inside.  Opening mine was a mystery prize which meant I was in the running for the main prize.  As was Wayne.  We had no idea what the main prize was.  it ended up being an I-pad...and no we didn't win that...I got 2nd with some gold jewelery and Wayne received a handbag camera.  We pick them on Wednesday, when we get to work.  All in all a successful night.

We have just had a wonderful time with Wayne's two brothers, Ian and David along with Brigid and Katie, showing them the sights and seeing new places.  We arrived out at the airport with plenty of  time and ate dinner while waiting for them to get off the plane.  It was wonderful to see the smiles on all their faces when they could see us through the glass.  It still amazes me how quick you come through immigration and customs at Changi Airport - by far one of the quickest we have ever been through.

First up we had to have a local breakfast - unfortunately we were too late for the kaya toast but we enjoyed the eggs (showing them a new way to boil your egg!) and the roti.
Topping up the train cards was a family affair.  For the kiwis new to this it was fascinating.  Singapore by far  has one of the best public transport systems.

You could not be in Singapore without having a Singapore Sling at Raffles Hotel in the Long Bar where you are able to eat the 'free' peanuts and throw the shells onto the floor.
Just to show you how famous I am....they have put my initials all over the hotel!!!!!

Ian left his phone in the car so him and I went to a revolving restaurant to pick it up.  we then met the others at Vivi City for a cold drink but not before taking Brigid to Lims to spend.  Katie also had her hair straightened by a nice guy at one of the booths on the ground floor.  unfortunately for her, when I came along to see what they were doing he virtually pushed her off the chair and pulled me onto it.   My hair apparently is perfect for demonstrating his curling tongs.  We were tempted to buy them and would have - just so Brigid could get her free small straightener - if the curls stayed in my hair the 24 hours he said they would.  But alas for Brigid, they did not.

Next stop was Chinatown for dinner and some more shopping.  It is Lantern time so the area was lit up beautifully.

You also can not come to Singapore without purchasing something from an Orchard Road Shop.  Great shoes you bought Katie.

Steamboat cooking is a favourite pastime here.  you have a soup pot in the middle and a small grill around the outside.  It costs around $20 for smorgasbord food and cook it yourself.  An absolutely wonderful way to eat and socialise.
Another thing is to have a meal along the riverfront...one of favourite places is Iguanas.
Such a beautiful place to eat, great food and great company.

We then headed down to watch the kites fly.  David was so enthralled that he bought one  and now I am so jealous.

We took a taxi home and this is the view out the front window of the taxi looking along Newbridge Road.
We are off to Bintan for a relaxing weekend.  We are eating breakfast, egg, kaya toast - yum.

This little fella just posed for me ...he is rather cute...I still expect the squirrels to be bigger than they are.
Caught the boys having a cold beer at the pool bar.
Once they realsied they decided to make a quick getaway!

When this grasshopper flies his wings are red.  he is about the length of my phone.

Brigid and Ian having a quiet moment in the pool cooling off.
David is on his way to the Calypso Bar for a drink to watch the sun go down.
Ian and Wayne about to join him.
David enjoying a pineapple drink...it was rather nice.

We are all settled, chatting, drinking...and drinking in the atmosphere and the sunset which really wasn't that spectacular.
There was a glimpse of colour that did make it worthwhile.
When in Bintan, you have to have a meal at Kelong

While the boys were off somewhere, Brigid and I went up to the big shop, and the heavens opened.

Monitor lizards were abundant.
After breakfast, we were sitting and chatting when we noticed a squirrel run along the bench tip, nibble some bread and then jump up to the next level.
Resting on a tree.

Walking along the beach towards Mayang Sari.  All part of the Nirwana Gardens Resort.

Phu Quoc Island

After catching a domestic flight from Ho Chi Minh on a small plane where the propeller was outside my window, we were met at the airport and taken to Cassia Cottage and warmly welcomed.  Our little room was decked out with a welcome sign on the bed, we had some privacy and could sit on our verandah and watch the world go by.  Actually it was watching the butterflies go by.
This is the view from our verandah.  Behind Wayne is a swimming pool and beyond that is a small [park like area with trees and hammocks and a small stream.  From here you could laze in the hammocks and read books, chat and the staff would come around and ask if you wanted or needed anything and they were only to happy to oblige.  There was then the sea and it was so nice to have a clean beach with no local bothering you to sell or try the wares.
The beach had golden sand and was such a delight to walk on.  The sand was  a bit courser than the sand at home but was lovely to wander in barefeet and paddle in the water which was so warm.
The island has its own breed of dogs and we found many of them had dug holes in the sand and were sitting in them.  They looked so pretty and seemed to be smiling at us as we walked passed.  They have hair a bit like a ridge back dog along their spine but it looks tufty.
I am continually amzed by these boats - woven round boats - sometimes called basket boats.  They are able to stand in them and come in on the waves and don't seem to keel over.  The one we saw being used in the sea had 3 adults and they were using a net for fishing.
At one of the beach were an outcrop of rocks and as I went to put my hand on it a movement caught my eye.  The rock was loaded with sea lice ranging from very small to very big.
After dinner one night we came back to see we had a house guest outside on the wall.  Tokay gecko's are one of the biggest geckos and are so pretty with their coloured dots that are almost fluorescent.  I am not sure I want to get up close as they are said to be the bull dog of the lizards and hold on tight for a long time.
Needless to say I didn't get very close to it all.  Thanks goodness for zoom lens!
This guy was on the other wall and just sitting there waiting for unsuspecting prey.  In reality it was only about 2 inches from toe to toe but was plenty g=big enough for me.
One of the highlights of this place was the abundance of insect life - especially butterflies.  Although they weren't very obliging and it was  a mammoth task to get the photos.  Patience truly is virtue and it pays off in the end.
They even went right inside the hibiscus to get a drink.
This guy was very tiny, about 1 inch wingspan.  I just love the number of pretend eyes he has on his wings.
                                                           Can you find the butterfly?
Here it is, hiding underneath the leaf....such good camouflage.
Seems like this flying about is thirsty work.  The butterflies were always stopping at the flowers but only for such a short time.  It was fun trying to get these photos...am sure the other people thought we were crazy.  But to look back at these photos, I know we are not crazy but love to see nature working naturally.
Dragonflies were abundant too and they too were elusive.  I think its the hot weather and its probably cooler to fly than to settle and wait.
Drinking a Saigon Beer on the beach under the shade of an umbrella...what a pleasant way to spend the early evening.
This little frog was sleeping on a leaf in the shade.
This one wasn't sleeping he was watching everything we did.  As we walked closer he walked further away until he finally jumped onto the grass and ran up the wall.
We walked along the beach and up to the local town and wandered around.  They are so ingenious with how they use the bicycle for transporting a number of different items.
I kept waiting for her to fly away in the wind.  Balloons seem to be a big thing and easy to sell and make a little money for very little effort.
The river was quite pretty, with the different coloured boats, until you looked into the waters edge and could see all the crap and rubbish building up.
And sunsets were astounding.  Each night they looked so different and so spectacular.  They could be moody or they could be....
many different colours.
